Oswalt was born in a village in Floß where his father, Ridgewell Digby, had been serving in the global wizarding war. After having moved to London at age 4, Oswalt learned under the tutelage of his uncle, Mortimer Ruggles Storke, as his parents were regularly occupied with their jobs in the Ministry. Once he came of age he was enrolled at Hogwarts and became a member of house Gryffindor.

At once time Digby had the reputation of being a strict disciplinarian. His temper was not short, but it was mighty and he most certainly felt obligated to impose discipline on his students. His attitude changed shortly after his experience with a Dark Wizard who had taken control of his mind. This harrowing ordeal gave him a greater understanding.
