The Unlocking Charm (Alohomora), is a charm that unlocks doors and windows that are not protected by some sort of magic, such as an Anti-Alohomora Charm. It can also unlock doors that have been locked by the Locking Spell Colloportus.

Casting and Effects

When cast, the spell is normally invisible, moving the lock with the spell casters wand's flick. This spell opens most locked doors and windows. In opposite effect, Colloportus can be used to re-lock doors and windows.

Not all doors and windows can be unlocked with Alohomora however. Some are much more powerfully locked by stronger Witches and Wizards, preventing them from opening properly.

The Incantation for the simplest Unlocking Charm is Alohomora.

Variations of use

  • Unlocks locked doors
  • Unlocks locked windows

Etymology

J. K. Rowling stated that the word was from the West African Sidiki dialect used in geomancy and has the literal meaning "Friendly to thieves".

OOC Information

The Unlocking Charm requires a player to be level 1 or higher in order for it to cast successfully. Role players are of course more than welcome to attempt to cast this spell if they are below the required level. In some cases -usually in the event of a resounding success (critical)- the attempt may roll success despite being below its required level.

Use in Role Play

This spell is used to simply unlock doors and windows. However as mentioned above, there may be an event in which the spell simply cannot work, regardless of a successful cast or not. This is because previous Role Play was done on a door or window to prevent this spell from actually unlocking it. It is recommended that Role Players attempting to unlock something, simply ask. In most cases there will likely be something that informs players that the unlocking charm will not work at the site of the door or window itself.

Examples

  • Fail

MM - HUD v2.2.16: MM Character attempted to cast Unlocking Charm and failed.

MM Character held their wand outward and aimed the tip of their wand at the lock that held the door shut. "Alohomora!" MM said and the door's lock did nothing, refusing to unlock!

  • Blocked by an Anti-Alohomora Spell

MM - HUD v2.2.16: MM Character attempted to cast Unlocking Charm and succeeded!

MM Character held their wand outward and aimed the tip of their wand at the lock that held the door shut. "Alohomora!" MM said. MM struggled to force the lock open, though something seemed to be preventing it. "Well... It was worth a shot!" MM shrugged in defeat.
